Project Sandrail

Part 1.6

Preliminary Frame Buildup

29 July 2000

The frame has been moved back into the garage and the billet hubs, bearings, stub axles, front and rear brakes, shocks and tie rods installed. The rear dirt tires have been bolted to the car, as have the front tires.

Rear billet hub:

Rear brakes (less calipers):

Front suspension + brakes:

Today, with Mike's help, the pedals, floorboard, and driver's seat will be assembled to the frame.

First I had to weld some tabs to the frame to support the floorboard. One of the tabs is indicated by the arrow:The 0.090" aluminum sheet is placed under the car and marked for cutting.

Then, a pre-drilled pedal mount that was provided by Tatum needed to be placed and welded to support beams:

The floorboard was cut, fitted and then removed to drill the holes:

The pedals were bolted through the floor to the mounting plate:

The seat, steering wheel and pedals can be seen here:

The seats slide like those in a street car to fit different sized drivers.

That was today's project, but just for fun, we installed the transmission and incomplete engine to get an idea of what the car would look like.

Check out the travel on the front suspension!
