Part 6:

Finishing the car

 

After a few hours of pushing Mike up and down his street in the rolling chassis, it was brought back into the garage and flipped on its side to permit welding al the seams and joints that were not accessible when the car was on the wheels

Welding with the trusty Miller 135 mig. 

The welding on the underside complete, the tranny and engine are placed in the chassis and gas tanks and battery box are located and welded into place and the shift rod is cut to size

Up at the front of the car, the floorboard tabs have been welded and the floors are drilled and bolted down and the pedals, cooler rack and shifter can be located and attached.

Here's a look at the battery tray and front tranny mount. The battery has a disconnect switch between the negative terminal and the ground point on the tranny mount to allow instant and complete electrical disconnection in the event of a problem or for storage to prevent battery drain

The rear shock mounts were gusseted and will be capped and finished before powdercoating the car next year.

Limit straps are necessary in the front to keep the arms from over extending. 

This is a shot looking straight down at the pedals.  Note the clean and precise bends in the hard lines.  The lines were cut to size and 45 degree double-flared to match the standard brake fittings. At the rear of the car where flexible lines were needed, a single 37.5 degree flare was put on the hard lines to match the A/N fittings used.

Lazerstar lights are used. A small hole is drilled in the frame and a nut welded over it.  The wire is run through the hole and the light is screwed directly into the welded nut.  Clean.

The top lights are installed the same way.

Here's the "GO" pedal.  Note the nice morse cable and clamp that Mike fabbed and welded to the frame. 

This is the back side of the gauge and switch panel.  All the wires have been run through the frame.  It was a big pain in the ass, but the results are worth it.  A nice aluminum skin will be made to cover the wires.  Everything is fused and the wires were pulled using 0.030 mig wire as the guide.

This is the front view of the panel.  Tach, oil pressure, oil temperature, lights, whip light and and extra toggle.  The big covered switch is the ignition and start switch.

Here's the cutting brake.  Note the nice, clean and precise bends in the hard brake line.
